What Is the Vestibular System?

The vestibular system is located in the inner ear and works with your brain, eyes, and muscles to control balance and spatial awareness.

When this system isn’t functioning properly, it can cause symptoms such as:

  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Poor balance

  • Motion sensitivity

  • Visual disturbance

  • Nausea

Treatment focuses on helping the brain adapt and compensate for these disruptions.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Ménière’s Disease

Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

Vestibular rehabilitation is the primary treatment for most vestibular disorders.

It involves customized exercises that retrain the brain and balance system.

Gaze Stabilization

  • Improves eye control during head movement

Balance Training

  • Enhances stability and coordination

Habituation Exercises

  • Reduces motion sensitivity

Positional Maneuvers

  • Used for BPPV (e.g., Epley maneuver)

Walking & Functional Training

  • Restores confidence in daily movement
